Deer Vision Research

We are investigating the spatial resolution of deer by assessing visual acuity and the contrast sensitivity function. We have selected semi-tame captive does and are currently acclimating them to specialized stalls equipped with a Deer Training Apparatus (DTA). The DTA is programed to run a series of trials that will display our visual stimulus on the monitor screens. The deer will be trained to associate the visual stimulus with a positive food reward. Once deer are trained to approach the monitor displaying the visual stimulus, we will randomize the screen on which the stimuli will be presented, and manipulate both spatial frequency and level of contrast. We will obtain a measure of spatial resolution by assessing each deer’s performance at various spatial frequencies and contrast levels.
